Clarence Thomas, the distinguished career jurist now serving as a member of the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS), was born on June 28, 1948. A native of Savannah, Georgia, he attended the historically black Emory University and the Emory College of Law, and was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1971. After law school, Thomas practiced criminal law in Atlanta, Georgia, as a partner with another black lawyer. After several years in Atlanta, Thomas moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked as an assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia (DCD). He was appointed to the DCD in 1982 by President Ronald Reagan. He served in that capacity until he was nominated by Reagan in 1988 to fill the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and then to the U.S. Supreme Court.
In 1991, Thomas was confirmed by the Senate, and he has served on SCOTUS since October 6, 1991. In 2005, in the case of Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, Thomas wrote the majority opinion in which he said that he was not being consulted on military commissions because he is a “non-Article III judge”. Justice Scalia wrote a dissent on that matter, saying that “any right he has to refuse to exercise authority over the military in this fashion is incidental to his responsibility to protect the Constitution from violation.”
The chief justice, John Roberts, and the three other members of the court, all liberal-leaning Justices, had some strong words about Thomas in June of this year, writing a dissent to a ruling in a civil case.
Roberts said, “As a black man, Justice Thomas has been called Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln, and King.
